All objects featured in the exhibition ≪Trans-Furniture (What Happened to the Furniture)≫ are symbolic pieces that testify to the relationship between the "original furniture" that once filled the home of architect saasaakunkun and the "reconfigured objects" newly designed based upon them.

The Power of Furniture to Turn Any Place into Home
For saasaakunkun, a wardrobe is more than a storage unit; it is the first point that maps out a space. He recalls the kitschy molding decorations on the large wardrobe in his parents' bedroom during his childhood. As long as those decorations were in sight, he felt at ease even under an unfamiliar ceiling. Having moved seven times, he realized that what truly protects him is not the physical space itself, but the massive objects that always joined him on the moving truck.
Choosing a Raw Touch Over Sleek Efficiency
When he moved into a new home, the architect found the large pine plywood wardrobe in the hallway somewhat estranging, standing there like the expressionless face of an "industrial product." It was a sleek silence hidden behind the names of efficiency and economy. He decided to create a small crack in that silence. He sketched rough outlines with tape, picked up a carving knife, and began to etch raw yet honest lines into the hard wooden panels.

Where Italian Stars and Arches Settle I
n the fall of 2024, a trip to Italy gifted these wandering lines with specific "scenes." The intertwined branches from Da Vinci's ceiling frescoes, the iron bands tightly reinforcing the pillars of Bologna's cathedrals, and the silhouettes of towers viewed from breathtaking heights—these fleeting afterimages from his travels passed through the architect's eyes and settled onto the furniture's surface. These are not mere artificial decorations; they are the result of translating the sensations gained from interacting with the world into a language of memory.

How Wood and Metal Embrace Each Other
To bring furniture that felt like a private diary onto the public stage of an exhibition, saasaakunkun contemplated the logic of "interlocking" as a designer. He sought the precise point where heterogeneous materials—wood and metal—could meet without conflict, structurally and decoratively. Through this painstaking process on the blueprints, his intimate memories took on a solid form capable of communicating with others. By adding small hooks for bags and keys, the heavy wooden mass finally becomes a life companion with a gentle "utility."

Artist’s Note

“I have never stayed in one place for very long. I have moved about seven times so far, and at some point, I realized that it is not so much the houses or the neighborhoods that form my image of home. It is the bedroom wardrobe that traveled with me each time, and other things like that.”
