All objects featured in the exhibition ≪Trans-Furniture (What Happened to the Furniture)≫ are symbolic pieces that testify to the relationship between the "original furniture" that once filled the home of architect saasaakunkun and the "reconfigured objects" newly designed based upon them.

No Surface Left Unfinished
The plain, exposed back of furniture revealed whenever rearranging a room—the architect found this lack of attention disappointing. "If the back panel is made so carelessly, it leaves us no choice but to push it against a wall." This minor grievance led to a persistent design effort directed at every single surface of the furniture. Inspired by the Bangpungneol (wind-shutter boards) found on the sides of traditional Korean gabled roofs, the architect applied their form to the back of a bookshelf. It was a quiet declaration to the hidden places: "This surface, too, has been intentionally designed."

Bookshelf, water-based stain and acrylic paint on lauan plywood, W600 x D168 x H990 mm, 2020 (Original from home)
An All-Weather Structure Ready for Anything
By putting effort into every surface, the furniture finally gains its freedom. What was once a bookshelf on the floor dividing a space transforms into a "wall unit" floating in the air once hinges are attached. This bold structural transition was only possible because the object was built with the integrity to stand proudly from any angle. Instead of fixed walls, this flexible structure—composed of finely divided cabinets that can be disassembled and moved at any time—represents the most useful attitude an object can offer to those of us living in constant migration.

Traces of Contemplation Refined on Blueprints
Originally, the architect favored the wobbly, raw lines drawn by hand. However, in the process of recreating the new sskk-3 in metal, the machine-cut lines felt too sleek and indifferent, as if the designer’s contemplation had been omitted. To overcome this indifference, the architect clung to the blueprints with renewed persistence. By repeatedly carving and refining the elliptical shapes he had long admired, a soft curve resembling a leaf was finally born. It is a physical trace of the hours spent wrestling with the design.

Artist’s Note

"If I build even a single wall in my home, I want it to be a wall that can move with me when I leave. Instead of one large partition, I try to divide the space by combining smaller, modular storage units. In practice, this requires far more material, and it can be less stable and more precarious than a structurally fixed wall. Judged by efficiency alone, it may seem unnecessary. But I am aware that we are beings who live in constant migration. That is why I always tell the people who come to see me: 'Please keep carrying this furniture with you. Please let it wear, and let it age.'"
